GREENWICH is a large town and borough, on the south bank of the Thames, and joins Deptford to the east; it is in Blackheath hundred, and the lathe of Sutton-at-Hone. The population in 1851 was 34,801. The borough, which returns two members to Parliament, includes Greenwich, Deptford, Woolwich, and Charlton. The magnificent Hospital for aged and wounded seamen, which is now such a great ornament to the town, was commenced by Charles II, who caused the old building to be pulled down, The Royal Observatory is situated in the Park, on a high hill. It was founded in 1695, and is considered the finest in the world.
