Carlton Tavern, 33 Carlton Vale, Maida Vale, Paddington NW6

Paddington pub history index

Existed from at least 1864. Closed and demolished on 7th April 2015. *** The Carlton Tavern was demolished a day before the property was to be listed. The Council has passed judgment that the pub now needs to be rebuilt exactly as before demolition.

A week before the Carlton Tavern in Carlton Vale was ‘pulled down’ without permission a few years ago, I was passing and decided to have a pint there.
I happened to have my Nikon camera with me that day and as I was the only person in the pub, apart from one regular, I asked the ‘manageress’ if I could take some photos and she agreed. **  [They are at the bottom of this page, and rather excellent.]

Carlton Tavern, 33 Carlton Vale, NW6 - Licensee A Stribling

I would think the photograph was taken around 1913, as the little boy in the photo, Arthur George Stribling, looks about 2 years of age. He later died aged 7 after the pub got hit by a WW1 bomb in May 1918. In the centre I would think it is Arthur Stribling senior with his wife and Sister in Law (Lady's help) holding the young boy's hands.

Arthur Stribling was there, as you show, in 1915. Then on the 19th May 1918 a war time bomb landed on the Carlton Tavern, badly damaging the pub and a couple of days later both Arthur Stribling (aged 48) and his son Arthur G Stribling (aged 7) died of their injures in St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. His wife survived. *

1918/Arthur George Stribling of the Carlton Tavern Carlton Vale Middlesex died 19 May 1918 Administration London 20 December to Elizabeth Stribling widow. Effects £132 9s 4d.

1918/ Arthur Stribling of the Carlton Tavern Carlton Vale Kilburn Middlesex died 20 May 1918 at St Marys Hospital Paddington Middlesex Administration London 23 July to Elizabeth Stribling widow. Effects £2274 6s 8d.

Thomas John William Terry took over the bomb damaged pub shortly afterwards, he lived at 308 Essex Road, Islington. The attached then shows my Grand Father took over the Carlton Tavern from his Brother in Law in August 1920.
The pub couldn't be lived in due to the old bomb damage, so each day he travelled backwards and forwards from 52 Oakley Road, Islington to run the pub up until he left to take over the Parrs Head around 1921. *

Thomas John William Terry was the licensee at the "Green Man",  Halliday Walk (later Mildmay Street) in 1915-1917. He also had the "Carlton Tavern", which he took over in 1918. He was the licensee at "Foresters Arms" Loughton in 1918 (where his first wife Elsie died). Then he was the licensee at the "Gower Arms" Store Street in 1923, and the licensee in 1925 - 1926 at the Denbigh Arms, Denbigh Place, with his second wife Florence Ellen. When Thomas John William Terry died in 1930 (aged 41), the probate shows him at the "Beaumont Arms" Uxbridge Road. I am not sure whether his second wife Florence Ellen continued there.  He was my Grandmother Carnaby's Brother. *
