George Evans (1860-1924) was an Undertaker, living and working at 15 High Street, Stepney, just a couple of doors away from the Crown and Dolphin.
His family had very close marital connections with the Pass, Terry and Carnaby families, all publicans. Most of the of the above families were buried by Evans Undertakers in Manor Park, Cemetery. *

When he married in 1895, was Licensed Victualler of the King of Prussia, Garth Street, Shadwell. In 1901 to 1902 he was the "Beer House Keeper" at the Royal Arms, 1 Rollo Street, Battersea. 1904-1907 he had the Crown and Dolphin, 10 Stepney High Street. 1908 to at least 1914, he was the "Beer House Keeper" at the Duke of Richmond, 135 Earls Court Road. *

1924 George Evan died at the White Horse, 48 White Horse Road, E1, owned by his Sister in Law, Selina Godier (nee Pass and nee Evans). Also Probate to
Selina, effects £222-18s. *

My great grandparents Henry and Sophia Hedger had the Crown and Dolphin in Stepney High Street from around 1910. After Henry's death in 1920, Sophia ran the pub, later with her son Reg.
When Reg was called up in WW2, they gave up the pub, and moved to Ilford to live with her daughter Eva (my grandmother) and family. The pub was bomb damaged later in the war, I don't know exactly when, and obviously many bombs fell in the area, but the website wrsonline.co.uk documents a V2 rocket strike on the corner of St Dunstan's churchyard opposite the pub on 4/1/1945.
The whole of that side of Stepney High Street is now occupied by the Stepney City Farm. ***
