Joseph Brown is at the Eagle from about 1923 when his youngest son George is aged 7. Joseph would have been aged about 36 then, and was married in 1909 to Elizabeth Stroulger. *

My Grandfather, Joseph Brown, ran the pub for many years. Joseph Brown; born 28.2.1889 in Bonner Street, Bethnal Green; and Eliza ( Not Elizabeth) Stroulger ; born 19.6.1887 in Gainsborough Road, Hackney; They married 1.8.1909 in Hackney. **

They took over the pub in 1922 when it was a beer house under the Mann, Crossman & Pauline brewery. They had 3 children, Joseph, the eldest; Ethel, my mother ; George, the youngest.
They had previously run a general shop in Mallard Street, also in Hackney Wick, for some 6 years. Before that Joseph had been a brush maker and Eliza a confectioner at the local factory of Clarnicos.
The couple retired from the pub to South Benfleet in Essex in 1951. During their time at the pub they were additionally licensed to sell beer and wines and spirits but I don't know of the exact date. The mansard roof to the building was added by the brewery in 1938/39 to give the family more living accommodation .
As a young child I spent a good deal of time at the Eagle and was given free rein over the building but my favourite place was the beer cellar watching the barrels being delivered through the traditional wooden beer drop trap, evidence of which can still be seen at the front of the pub. **
