London Street Directory in 1940 - index.

London Street Listings in 1940.

As this street listing gets larger, it may need these indexes to be split by alphabetical second letter. The 1940 street directory serves two purposes. It was a listing of many of the buildings in London just prior to the blitz of London with air raids. The first major raid took place on the 7th September 1940 and continued until May 1941. Along with the later V1 and V2 rocket attacks in 1944-45, over 85,000 Londoners were killed and injured. The LMA has been instrumental in researching this topic in great detail. There is also a site which maps all of the bombing targets into one massive mapping.

The secondary reason for this listing is that an 1939 electoral register exists which details the inhabitants of a property with more detail than normal. It includes dates of birth, which are incredibly useful. This is available on the pay subscription sites such as Ancestry, but this is also freely available from your local library.
