 History of Rainham

Rainham, is a village, parish, and station on the London and Southend railway, in the Southern division of the county, Chafford Hundred, Romford Union, and county court district, Chafford rural deanery, Essex archdeaconry and Rochester diocese, 3 miles north west from Purfleet, 13 from London, 7 ½ north west from Grays, and 5 east of Barking:  The village forms a considerable street on the London Road, and the Ingerbourne brook, over which is a bridge, and has a quay on the creek, at its mouth, in the Thames. The church of S S Helen & Gils (the only one in England dedicated to these saints jointly), is an old structure, supposed to have been built in the reign of Henry II, with chancel, nave, south aisle and porch: the arch separating the nave from the chancel is Norman: the tower contains 3 bells.  The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £412, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late John Godsalve Crosse, esq, and held by the Rev Henry George Roche, BC<; the Rev Mortimer Manley, MA of Queens College , Cambridge, is curate in sole charge. The poor have £10 10s yearly in bread. R W Hall Dare, esq, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late J G Crosse esq. and Sir Thomas Barrett Lennard, bart, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravely. The chief crops are vegetables, great quantities of which are grown for the London markets. The area is 3,253 acres, gross estimated rental, £8,666; rateable value, £7,874, and the population, in 1871, was 1,122.
