My grandmother Henrietta Smith married WT Cresswell on September 18th 1918 at Islington, and they ran this pub.
She was a widow, aged 49, daughter of Elijah Reader, a deceased publican and he was a printer aged 53, also a widower.
Elijah Reader was the publican at the Merry Fiddlers, Wood lane, Becontree Heath, Dagenham from at least 1867 until his demise, after which his wife Sophia ran the business for some time; and latterly his son Ernest Reader.
Henrietta Reader married Stephen Smith in 1890 at Enfield, his father, James Smith, was also a publican. They run the Red House Inn at Great Amwell in 1901 until about 1908; and then the Highway Tavern, at Rye park, Hoddesdon in 1911.
