Sunbury pub history index
A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in Middlesex.
This pub bears the date ‘1640’ on its frontage, which may be the date the pub was established – it was certainly present by 1759. It closed in 1956 and the premises are now in restaurant use. **

On the 1911 Census, for Middx Sunbury, my Great Grandfather appears with his family running The Castle. *
In 1901 he is not working but prior to this he was at the Prince Blucher, Twickenham.
They are:
William James Lyons (54), Licensed Victualler, Kennington, Middlesex
Alice Henrietta Lyons (57), his wife, Pinner, Middlesex
May Lyons, his daughter (22), Assisting in business, Shepperton, Middlesex
Marie Keller Davis, Mother to Alice, Widowed (77), Private Means, Zurich, Switzerland
I am afraid I do not know how long they ran the pub. I do know that he was not working on 1921.

My father, Joseph Henry Hunt was landlord of the Jacobs Well, 17 New Inn Yard, Curtain Road, Shoreditch EC2 in 1931 to 1932. This was his first pub and he left it to move to the Castle Hotel, 21 Thames Street, Sunbury on Thames, which he ran from at least 1935 to 1938. ***
Then, after a short spell running an off-licence at White Lane, Alton, Hampshire, he was landlord of the Cross Lances public house, Hansworth Road, Hounslow, circa 1938 to 1941.
That was his last pub. He moved out of London during the War and emigrated to New Zealand in 1945 where his descendants now live.
This information comes from family information passed on, notes on the back of photographs and Joseph's driving licence.
