History of the Royal Oak, St James's Lane, Muswell Hill

Last Wooden Inn:
After four times escaping replacement, the doom of the little Royal Oaik, in St James's lane, Hornsey, is imminent. As Geoffrey Fletcher's drawing shows, it is a wooden building - the last of its kind in London
In the last century it brewed its own beer, and groceries and candles were sold over the counter until 1956. Its stables went at the turn of the century.
Unless it can be preserved as an annexe to a new building, it will soon disappear.
Although there has been an ale house on the site for 360 years, the present structire appears to date from about 1790. Once fields surrounded it on Muswell Hill.
Customers - men mainly, as women do not care for its simple style - talk of Dick Turpin. A more likely legend is that Lady Arabella Stuart came here in man's attire, escaping from Highgate, during here tumultous career, for horses to carry her the the Thames.
