My great-grandmother’s younger sister, Florence Martin, was born at the Cart
Overthrown, Marsh Side, Edmonton on 26th March 1859. That was the residence
of her father, James Martin, whose occupation was Licensed Victualler, and
mother, Sarah, and my great-grandmother, also Sarah.
I have no idea how long the family lived there or how long James Martin was
involved in the licensed trade. My great-grandmother, then a small child,
had been born in Kent and by the time of the 1861 census the family was
living elsewhere in Edmonton; James’s occupation then being watchmaker. ***
In 1861, Ambrose Bradbury (1828 - 1898) was the Licensed Victualler, living
in The Overthrown Cart Public House (sic) in Edmonton.
Additionally, Ambrose's parents were living at the Cart in 1861. The birth
record for Ambrose in 1828 also lists his parents as publicans in 1828. *
