Blue Anchor, Angel Road, Upper Edmonton N18

Edmonton index

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in Middlesex.

The Railway Tavern pub on Water Lane (Angel Road), to the west of Water Lane (Angel Road) station opened in 1851. Within a few years it was renamed The Blue Anchor. The pub closed in 1937 and was destroyed by a German V1 flying bomb during WW2. The licensee at closure was Lelslie A Hastings. Kathy Jones (born 1921) remembers the night "As war progressed, the doodlebugs started to come. One night we could see a doodlebug flying very close and knew it was about to drop and we called for dad to come down to the shelter but he called back “It’s alright I’m in the mint”. I don’t know what protection he thought that lying in a patch of mint in the garden was going give him. We laughed about it later. This was the Doodlebug that fell on the ‘Blue Anchor’ pub, in Angel Road. There were quite a few lives lost again that night." *

The pub was destroyed on July 24th 1944 when a V1 exploded in neighbouring Montagu road. ***

Rent due to the London and Burton Brewery Company in 1878 was £10 per quarter.
Mr Griffiths paid cash of £520 for Goodwill and utensils in hand and household furniture of the pub. Date is not clear but probably sometime between GCF death and the transfer of licences etc. Rent was paid by GCF estate for the last two quarters of 1878.
