In the records of the Gordon Riots of 1780 there is a Red Lion located in Black Lion (Lyon) Yard; the Yard’s entrance was at (then) 39 Whitechapel High Street. The current address for the pub would be at behind 75 Whitechapel High Street. The landlord was Christopher Conner; the pub was attacked and burned on the night of the 7th of June 1780.
