Here is Aldgate High street in 1682 and this property is not named, although Whatpub suggest it a "Listed Building dating from the 11th century; there has been an Inn on the site since the thirteenth century. The current pub was converted from a wine merchant in 1920. It missed the Great Fire of London by a few yards"
In 1782 listed as The Hoop and Bunch of Grapes. *+
This is not again named until 1938, maybe earlier. It is now a Nicholson's pub (Mitchell and Butlers). ***

In particular I spent a long time digging into the Hoop & Grapes, which is part of this online video, on YouTube. *+
Probably most interesting is the Sun Fire Office record from 1782 held at the LMA, as that, to my surprise, actually contained the modern pub name - more or less - "The Hoop and Bunch of Grapes". The owner at that time was listed as James Stracey - "dealer in wines and spiritous liquors".
I also found some entries in various London directories in 1772, 1774, 1779, 1780 and 1781 where the name listed is Thomas Stracey, "wine and brandy merchant". The address is given either as "47, without Aldgate" or "47, Aldgate without" and I believe that corresponds directly to the modern address of 47 Aldgate High Street. It's interesting that the Sun Fire Office record is already calling it Aldgate High Street in 1782 though. To complicate matters further if you look at some maps n the 1700s that section of the street was labelled Whitechapel (or White Chapel or even White Chapple) rather than Aldgate.
In directories from 1783 onwards the name has changed to Henry Newton.
