My 2 X greatgrandfather is described in his will as "Henry Chapman, of The Grapes Public House Marlborough Street in the parish of St. James Westminster...." He died in May 16, 1855. Occupation on his death certificate is "Licensed Victualler" of 26 Great Marlborough Street. I'm not sure if he actually owned the establishment or just held the license.

Henry Chapman was born and raised in Radwinter, Essex; likely moving to London as a young man. According to his children's birth certificates he was employed as a servant in Marylebone in 1842 and 1845. His next child was born in 1852, and at that time his occupation was "beer seller", and he was residing at Regents Park, Saint Pancras, moving up in the world.

We have a portrait of Henry in which he appears to be well into middle age, portly and distinguished. He died at the age of 52. **

The lease on the Grapes was transferred from Mr J V Craske to Mr John Bullwinkle on 8th Nov 1876 for a total valuation of £3342/11/- ; The major Loan holder was Mann & Co. ***

John Bullwinkle had previously been a bootmaker but had inherited the Lease of the Red Lion, St Georges from his father Johann Ludovic Bullwinkel (aka John) who died in 1874 until 1st Nov 1875 when he transferred the Lease to his Cousin Henry (Hinrich) Bullwinkle. ***

Mr John Bullwinkle then sold the lease to Mr Henry Denford on 9 May 1877 for a total valuation of £3040/5/6d. ***

After selling the lease on the Grapes, John Bullwinkel next appears in the 1881 census as an LV at 57, Vicarage Road, West Ham but with no indication where he was working? He then became a Baker. ***
