1815 The Epicures Almanack : The Salopian Coffee House, near Charing Cross, is a most respectable and ancient establishment. Its larder has meats of various kinds and soups always ready, and its cellar furnishes excellent wines and liquors. On account of its proximity to the War office and the Admiralty, it is much requented by officers in the army, navy, and royal marines, who generally make it head quarters when their affairs cvall them to Whitehall. Army and navy lists, with all the pamphlets relative to either service, are to be seen here. An entrance into it from Spring Garden obviously adds to the convenience of the place in may exigencies. Since the commencement of this tour, Mr Horseman, the host, has paid the debt of nature, nd the business is conducted, with admiral fidelity, by his widow.

Mornings of the Recess 1861-1864 - Thomas Telford, engineer, for years he lived at the Salopian Coffee House, now the Ship Hotel, at Charing Cross. Successive landlords of the Salopian at length came to regard him as a fixture, and even bought and sold him from time to time with the goodwill of the business. When he at length resolved, on the persuasion of his friends, to take a house of his own, and gave notice of his intention of leaving, the landlord, who had but recently entered into possession, stood aghast.
"What! leave the house?" said he; "Why, Sir, I have just paid 750 pounds for you!" On explanation, it appeared that this price had actually been paid by him to the outgoing tenant, on the assumption that Telford was a fixture of the hotel, the previous tenant having paid 450 pounds for him, the increase in the price marking very significantly the growing importance of the engineer's position. He left, nevertheless, and took the house 24 Abingdon street, which had been occupied by Labelye, the engineer of Westminster Bridge, and he tenanted it until he left finally for Westminster Abbey.

April 1891 - Salopian Shred and Patches Vol 10:The Salopian Coffee House, London.
Messrs Kelly and Co publish an interesting letter respecting two of the old extinct coffee houses of Charing Cross, mentioned in connection with the assassination of Mr Drummond in 1841, as follows:-
"The Salopian Coffee House, which was kept by John Hall in 1843, was situate at No 41, next to Cock's and Biddulph's Bank, on the west side of Charing Cross. The business of the coffee house appears to have been given up soon after this date, as the Directory for 1845, we find the house in occupation of Mr W R Glazier, auctioneer and surveyor, and we now believe the premises sre occupied as offices by the Royal Engineers.
