Hartshorn lane, Charing Cross in 1746

Hartshorn lane, Charing Cross in 1746 - John Rocque map

The exact situation of what was presumably a tavern with the sign of the " Red Cross " is not apparent, but there was a Cross Lane, leading out of Spur Alley (Craven Street) into Hartshorn Lane (Northumberland Street) which Stow describes as " a place of small account." This may therefore have received its name from the " Red Cross " at Charing Cross.
