Charlotte Elizabeth Louise Thiele married John William Smith, publican on 28th May 1905. They had their first, and only, child Charlotte Alice Miriam Smith born in Hoxton in 1907. The 1911 census has John Smith and family living at “The Duncannon” 3, Duncannon Street St Martin in the Fields as the publican, with Charlotte assisting in the business, the clincher being the annotation “father German” with Nellie Lucy Thiele “sister in law” (misspelt Shiele) living in aged 18 noted as a “nursemaid domestic”, again, father noted as German. Six staff members are listed excluding the Smiths and Nellie. The Telephone Directory has John still there in 1913.  *

The couple appear to have moved to the Norwood Hotel 3, Knights Hill Norwood by the end of the Great War, with John William Smith shewing as the licensee in 1919 and 1921, The Norwood Hotel still exists, now as the “Great Northwood Hotel” (2016) and is listed as an “Imposing mid-19th Century public house in red brick with stucco dressings in a Jacobean style”.
Charlotte senior died of consumption in Switzerland having gone there in the hope of a cure. This is borne out by her letters of administration which has her address as Tarrazona Mansions Boscombe, whilst having died at Territet Montreux Switzerland (on the “Vaud Riviera” overlooking Lake Geneva) on 16-9-1922. Administration was granted to Charlotte’s husband John William Smith publican.
John William Smith, licensed victualler, married Charlotte’s first cousin Edith Mills’ the widow of John Deardon Mills in Islington in 1927. *
