On 15 May 1782 William Singleton was convicted of the theft of three half
crowns from John Edwards on 28 April 1782. The theft occurred in a public
house where they had been drinking together, and John Edwards gave evidence
that he believed it to have been the Feathers, Great Wild Street. Whether
his recollection was correct or not, the evidence clearly implies that the
Feathers must already have been in business as a public house at that time./

[It seems that William Singleton was a bricklayer from Cheshire, originally.
He was tried for highway robbery in George's Court, near Shoe Lane in 1776
but found not guilty. He was imprisoned for 1 year for the theft of the
three half crowns in the Feathers. On 8 June 1791 he was found guilty of
Simple Grand Larceny at the Swan With Two Necks, Lad-lane, and sentenced to
transportation. He sailed on the convict ship Pitt, which arrived in Sydney
in 1792. He was buried "on the plains" in New South Wales in May 1835.] *

In 1865 my 3rd great grandfather Louis Frederick Valet was the licensed victualler at 12 great wild street, i.e. the Feathers. My records show the administration of his estate and the 1865 business directory. He died in July 1865 so not sure how long he was there for as he wasn't there in the 1861 census as I think he was a manager of a hotel as I have a record that he worked in the Adelaides Hotel.

My family were the St Ledgers at the The Feathers, 12 Great Wild Street, St
Giles in the Fields. My Great Great Grandmother is listed as being aged 16
in 1871 and and living at The Feathers. In 1875 she marries a John Lynch
from 4, Drury Lane who is also listed as a publican, but I cannot find his
pub - though maybe he worked at the Feathers? **
