From 1815 to 1820, the poor rate records for St George Hanover Square show that the licensed victualler at the Hertford Arms was Samuel Stannard. He also occupied a house across the road from the pub and was qualified to vote in 1818. In 1814 the pub appears to have been occupied by Henry Meux and Co; I assume this was the brewers who owned pub? Old Bailey records show that Eleanor Castle was the landlady in 1797 and that James Tetsall was there by September 1820. **

I think it highly likely that Samuel Stannard was my 4xgreatgrandfather. Sacked from the excise service in 1801, he then ran the Shakespeare Hotel in Margate until 1811. Between 1811 and 1813 he wrote letters from London which indicate that he was involved in buying spirits, suggesting he was either a victualler or a trader. However I have no firm evidence of where he was or what he was doing and I have been unable to find his death. **
A Samuel Stannard was recorded renting property in John Street, St Pancras in 1815. In 1820, a Samuel Stannard of the Red Lion public house in Grosvenor Mews was refused a licence. The location and timing suggest this was probably the same man who had run the Hertford Arms. I have not been able to find a Red Lion in Grosvenor Mews and wonder if this was the Red Lion at the eastern end of Grosvenor Street? Land tax records on Ancestry show S Stannard at an unreadable address in the parish in 1823 and I need to follow this up in the poor rates. **
I hope you can use the information about the Hertford Arms and I would be grateful for any sightings of Samuel Stannard!
