Fox & Hounds, 29 Passmore street, London SW1

St George Hanover Square pub history index

The Fox & Hounds is in 1938 at 29 Passmore street, when the Somerset Arms was at 31 Passmore street. ** Also, I believe I’ve solved the mystery of the numbers changing in Passmore Street- I have seen a map that shows the original road running through to Whittaker Street. Originally Passmore Street actually only ran from Graham Terrace to Whittaker Street- it no longer exists. What we know now as Passmore Street today was actually called Union Street, Therefore any records of the Fox and Hounds Pub prior to the Street name change would be under Union Street. *** Amazingly the entry in 1891 census lists 16 Albert street as the Fox & Hounds, proving al these theories.

I believe the Fox has been there for quite some time; as  the Fox was my Fathers local for years, his Cousin Gordon used to work behind the bar. You can see him as a a baby in 1947 at the Somerset Arms.
He told me that the Fox was originally (when his Grandmother had her daily Stout there) just the front part of the (current) bar- it would have been tiny! Access to the outside toilets at the rear was out the front door and down Graham Terrace. Later the pub was extended into the back room, later still an extension further back to the once outside toilets ***

There was another pub in Graham Terrace, further up the road on the corner of Bourne Street, it was called the Pineapple, this was bought by St Mary's Church in 1922 and turned into a Presbytery  ***
