The name is given as simply the Duke William in the 1839 directory, as the Duke's Head in 1826 and earlier, and on one occasion (the 1789 insurance record) as the Duke of Bedford's Head. The later address of 9 Old Gravel lane is on the east side, a few doors from Starch yard. *
