The Dock House, (Watneys) 14, Old Gravel Lane, Wapping. (‘Opposite the Dock gates, by the swing bridge, towered over by dock walls’ description by George T and Ellen Townsleys eldest daughter.). Another early address is at 1 Beesons place, Old Gravel lane.
George Trotter (1834-1898) and Mary Ann Townsley (1846-1932) moved into the pub in the early 1880s. Their eldest son George Trotter Townsley (1875-1933) and wife Ellen (1883-1946) took over after Mary Anns death as did Ellen after her husband died.
In 1936 the pub was refurbished and unfortunately was destroyed in the bombing of 1940 after which the family moved to Kent. I’d love to know if there is any more I can find out about this pub which was such an important part of my families lives for so many years. **
The 1882 Trade Directory shows 14 Old Gravel Lane, next along the road after the Worcester Street intersection, and further along the road is the Bostock Street intersection; whilst the White Lion and Red Lion are at numbers 30 & 34. Going back to 1856, the white lion was at 153, Red Lion at 156. This may map this beer house as the same address as 1 Beesons Place at the intersection of Worcester Street / Pennington Street - a John Bonner is the current beer retailer in 1856. It is named the King and Queen, Beesons place, 1 Old Gravel lane in the 1851 census, and consequent entries use this address as a beer house up until 1869; which matches with the 1871 census.
