Paternoster row is in the Castle Baynard ward, when described by Maitland in his 1756 survey of London.
The Chapter coffee-house, at the north-west corner of Paul's alley, long the resort of eminent literary characters, was, it is stated, finally closed on the death of Mr. Charles Faithfull, the proprietor, in November, 1853. Two early leather tokens exist which would date it at 1786.
Paternoster Row was for many years sacred to publishers.
The Old Chapter, 49 & 50 Paternoster row by 1891 although it is still listed as the Chapter Coffee House, Paternoster row as late as 1874.
There is mention of the coffee house by Charlotte Bronte in her trips to LOndon in the 1840s.If you visit the Layers of London site, Paternoster row is just north of St Pauls Cathedral, and the Chapter House can be seen.
The entirety of this area was destroyed in the blitz in World war 2 and demolished.
