South London Press 27 September 1884 - Newington Transfer of Licenses
Shipwrights Arms, Bermondsey street, Mr Avery supported an application in this case for the transfer of the license from J Matts to William George Sayer, and also for permission to rebuild the premises. The Metropolitan Board, he said, had made of late a great improvement in the locality, and in so doing so they had pulled down the applicants house, which was a very old, dilapidated place. There had been, in addition to this, two other licensed houses taken down, the licenses of which would be done away with altogether. The bench granted both applications.
