My Grandmother, Ruth Victoria Violet Winson (ńe Hamilton), used to talk of her Father’s beer house. *
She was born in 1888 and her Sister Emma Maud Ethel in the following year. Her Father Francis Thomas (Frank) was widowed in 1893 and remarried Amelia Skelton (Aunt Minnie) in 1895.
Amelia had originally come as domestic servant to look after the two young girls, and Grandma always spoke of her with great love and affection.
Their wedding certificate of August 14th in 1895 lists Francis Thomas Hamilton, a Widower aged 33 as a Beer Retailer of 21 Woollett street. She was aged 23, and of the same address. Their fathers were noted a Francis William Hamilton, Bolier Maker and Edwin Skelton, a Builder.
It is the first actual historical evidence that I can find to support the accuracy of our family oral history. Grandma lived to 95 and had an amazing memory. One of her most fond ones was of her sneaking down the back stairs of the beer house after bed time to watch the snooker being played. She continued to love the sport.
