Bodega Company Limited, London - Wine and spirit Merchants

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in London.

The Bodega Company is a limited company which specialised in the licensed trade. Many of their establishments are plainly called Bodega, and a good example of this is the Rainbow Tavern, 15 Fleet Street. In 1921 it is listed in trade directories as the Rainbow Tavern, and run by the Bodega Company Limited, but by 1934 it is listed as just the Bodega. I have found entries between about 1902 and 1953 so far.

The Telephone directories are good to find the premises which they ran, for example in 1916, and 1918 they are referenced as the Bodega Co Ltd, Wine, Spirit Merchants, and in 1925, they run the following establishments, probably all called Bodega:

42 Glasshouse Street, W1 - 1905 to 1951

Cowpers Court, Cornhill EC3 - 1915 to 1925

15 Fleet Street EC4 - (Rainbow Tavern) - 1902 to 1953

Bodega Supervisor, 15 Fleet Street EC4 - 1950 to 1953

61 Bishopsgate EC2 - 1913 to 1927 (at 86 Bishopsgate in 1902 to 1910) [previously the Green Dragon]

Midland Railway Goods Station N1 - 1902 to 1927

72 Mark Lane EC3 - 1909 to 1927

5 Bucklersbury EC4 - 1902 to 1953 (previously the City of London Coffee Tavern)

45 Chancery Lane EC4 - 1913 to 1953 [previously the Hole in the Wall]

27 Eastcheap EC3 - 1916 to 1953 [previously the Cow & Calf]

Falcon, Falcon square EC1 - 1923 to 1940

5 Mill Street, W1 - 1926 to 1940 [previously the Bunch of Grapes]

2 Bedford Street WC2 - 1892 - 1953

Fox and Hounds, 1 London Road, Croydon - 1935 to 1953

47 High Street, Croydon - 1926 to 1953 [previously the Ship]

St Pancras Vaults N1 - 1937 to 1953

145 Aldersgate Street EC1 - 1926 to 1940 [previously the Old White Bear]

145 Holborn Bars EC1 - 1950 to 1953

16 Kensington High Street - 1950 to 1953 [previously the Duke of Cumberland]

I am adding a date spread above as I find the records. The first appearance found so far is about 1902.
