Mile End Pubs history

Historical London public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels. The Mile End East London listing uses information from census, Trade Directories and History to add licensees, bar staff, Lodgers and Visitors.

The address in 1856 and earlier was at 24 Exmouth Street, before road renumbering. In 1974 the pub had been renamed 'Hollands' - the address by then had become Brayford Square. Unfortunately it was badly damaged by fire in 1997 and never re-opened as a pub. The building is now in residential use. **

In the 1871 census, Daniel M HUNTER is shown living at and the current licensee of ‘The Bell’, 274 Wandsworth Road, Clapham. Whilst William BURT (and family) is in Devon in the 1871 census, being the current licensee of ‘The Exmouth Arms’ (same name) at 63 Union Street , Devonport. ***

My 2 x great grandfather was Thomas Twine (b Arundel 1818) who in 1871 was living at 9 Exmouth Street, Mile End Old Town with his wife Sarah (publican's wife) and their daughter. Thomas is described as a publican and having looked carefully through the census I decided that he must have been the publican of the Exmouth Arms. I don't think Thomas Twine was publican for very long. He dies (a 'gentleman' aged 61 in 1879) leaving a modest sum. *+

The Holland family took over from Henry EMMS around 1889-1890 to around 1928. The Trade Directories are notoriously a year or two out of date. I understand from Mrs HOLLAND, widow of last HOLLAND owner, that they sold the pub as a going concern to Youngs but it didn’t prove a profitable investment for them. Apparently, at one time it had a preservation order on it being one of the last few surviving London pubs with its original Victorian interior decor. ***

In the 1901 census, John Partridge Holland’s father, William Reuben HOLLAND, was at 740 Old Ford Road, Stratford Bow where he is listed as a beer retailer. I don’t think he ever had a direct involvement with ‘Hollands’. ***

John Holland's sister Hester married Walter Benjamin Groves in 1903. Hester and John's father William Reuben Holland is the William Holland visiting Walter and Helen at The Crown, Commercial Road at the time of the 1911 census. William died later that year from septicaemia. *

At the time of Walter and Hester's marriage Walter was managing the 'George Peabody' 146 High Street, Shadwell.
Walter's first wife, Alice May Harrison died at the George Peabody' in 1901. Their only surviving child was Alfred b 1896. Alfred went on to manage The White Horse at Hampstead which is where his father Walter B Groves died in February 1923. Prior to his death Walter had been managing 'The Kings Arms' by the Lion gate at Hampton Court.
About 1930 Walter's daughter, Lilian and her husband took over at the White Horse and remained there until after the war. They then bought, I think, The Beehive at Richmond and later moved to "The Rose of Lea" at Lea Green. *
