Merton pub history index
I believe that the Horse and Groom, High Street, Merton, had been called The Bricklayers’ Arms up to 1882: it was Dark House 1984 –1994, then Horse and Groom until 1997 before becoming Kilkenny Arms. ***

The pub on the right was the Horse and Groom, subsequently re-named to the Kilkenny Tavern.

I suspect the publican from circa 1888 was Thomas Chattell, ex
Black Swan, Catworth,
Huntingdon, who died aged 58, reg. Croydon 12/1895, leaving a widow Fanny
Maria Chattell. On 23 December 1896, she was re-married to my great
grandfather Levi Clement Elswood Elliott, a widower, who subsequently became
the licensee. He had retired on pension from the Metropolitan Police and,
unfortunately, came under suspicion of having watered the beer – which may
have led him to take his own life. Fanny M. Elliott, b. Grafham, Hunts, is
then listed in the 1901 Census as “Beer House Keeper'” in Merton but I do
not know what became of her.
