Joseph John Steward was my paternal great grand father. My paternal grand father Stephen Henry Steward was born at 123 Well Street, Hackney on 4th September 1891 his fathers occupation was Licensed Victualler; he died in 1962.
Ernest George Ovenden who is referred to as the proprietor in 1910 & 1915 married my great grand mother Eliza Susannah Steward (nee Johnson) after she was widowed by the death of Joseph John Steward.
I have a large group family photo taken I am informed at the “Green Dragon” (looks to possibly be in the back yard!) of the Wedding Party following my my grand fathers marriage on 11th May 1913 to my grand mother Jessie Steward (nee Hobbs). Interestingly on their marriage certificate his address is given as 95 Well Street (Butcher) and her address as 123 Well Street (Spinster) ? At the time of their wedding both their fathers were already deceased but both mothers still living and in the group photo referred to earlier.
Subsequently for quite a few years (until his death in 1962) my grand father Stephen Henry Steward was the proprietor of “The Castle”, 100 Holland Park Avenue, London W11 & he also at the same time owned and ran under management what was “Morrells” (Butchers), 96 Holland Park Avenue, London W11. His siblings were Joe Steward (who also later was a publican), Jack Steward (who I understand died in 1917 possibly in WW1) and Ada Steward (who I think also later was a publican).
As regards further info on the careers as publicans of both Joe ( one near harbour in Ramsgate possibly amongst others) & Ada (amongst possibly others “Warwick Castle”, Little Venice, that I used to visit as a kid). Joe was at the Harp, Ramsgate in 1922 at the birth of his daughter, and after at the Shipwrights Arms, Ramsgate. ***
