Islington pub history index
At 16 St James Road in 1856 and 1869, then at 144 St James road.. This pub was destroyed by a direct hit from a German V2 rocket on 26th December 1944. The immediate area is now Paradise Park. This pub's address changed to 144 MacKenzie Road N7 due to road renaming between 1938 and 1944. *+
I have been researching the V2 bomb that destroyed the Prince of Wales PH on Boxing Day 1944.
There were 74 people killed in the incident overall. In his detailed study of the Islington records, John Hook's publication "The Glorious Dead" lists 32 people who were specifically killed in the pub. The rescue services did record (many but not all) dead people in terms of where they were found. It is possible that some other people were blown up/blown out of the premises in the explosion. Given that, for example, 7 children from 1 family were killed all at 133 Mackenzie Road (directly opposite the pub), and other statements by survivors.
For the sake of accuracy, at least 32 and possibly up to 20 others, were killed. **
