Hackney Index
There was a pub in Hackney village in 1636 called the Rose, which was probably the predecessor of this pub. At 7 Anns Terrace, Cambridge Heath in 1856 and the 1861 census. **
If there was a building prior to 1830 on this site it
must be linked to a different location entirely. There
were recent Elizabethan remains found close to the site which would suggest
either a grand house or more likely shops on the Mare Street road and it is
possible a pub / coaching inn could have existed on site but the records are not
there to support this. In addition the building was badly damaged if not
destroyed in the 1870s and sold at auction after extensive renovation and
rebuilding in around 1886.The pub was shut in 1998 by Whitbread due to lack of trade,
it was subsequently squatted and treated very badly and was in a terrible state
of repair when we bought it and began repairs. A cursory glance at the building
beyond the need for new paint on the property would show it is occupied. ***
The building itself is dated back to 1830 and was only ever owned by the
Whitbread brewery. It has an interesting history in recent times and was once
host to a jazz club where Ronnie Scott used to play. In more recent times it
fell into a rather poor state of repair and notoriety losing reputation and
clientele. A name change to The Cambridge failed to halt the decline and
subsequent closure. ***
