My parents, Joe and Dorothy Darton, owned the lease on the pub from 1953 to
1965. Previously they had lived in Waltham Cross. They always opened the
pub, in the evening, on Christmas Day so that anyone who was lonely, hard
up, or living by themselves, could come and enjoy warmth, company and
hospitality at Christmas. Mum and Dad stoked up the fire and had the TV on
in the saloon bar. Many of their customers came in as soon as they opened
up, and could make half a pint of ale last all evening, but they all enjoyed
the friendly atmosphere and the welcome they received in the pub from their
hosts.
In the early 1960's a dance hall opened opposite called Chez Don, so the pub
was always very lively then and often had up and coming bands popping in for
a drink during intervals from playing on stage. The pub was originally a
Mann, Crossman and Pulman Pub, and later changed to Watney Man. The leasehold
also included the rental income from a lock up garage/repair and a
woodworking business which were situated behind the pub in Bentley Road.
Beyond that were some old houses on both sides of the road. On the opposite
side of Bentley road the houses only went partway down the road, because the
wartime bombing had destroyed the rest of the street. As children the old
bomb site made a wonderful playground. No "Health and Safety" then. ***
