Kings Head, 44 Middlesex Wharf, Hackney E5

Hackney pub history Index

In the 1886 photo of the Kings Head, Middlesex Wharf; The stretch of water in the foreground is Lea Dock, an inlet from the River Lea which runs behind the pub. The dock was filled in at the same that the pub was rebuilt. The sign on the roof, was visible from the river so that bargemen could spot the pub from a distance. The row of houses to the right was called Pleasant Place. ***
Original address is Lea Bridge Road, at 44 Middlesex Wharf, Upper Clapton by 1896; This pub was rebuilt in the 1920s at a time when all the older buildings in the area were removed on health grounds because of frequent flooding, but it closed and was demolished in around 2000. **
