Builder and first licensee: Thomas Edworthy **
1878 Edworthy Family Papers: Thomas Edworthy was a successful builder in the Herne Hill and Camberwell area and he bought a number of sites in Ivanhoe Road in December 1878 from A G Mallaleu who had acquired them a few months earlier from the British land Company. He covenanted to build a public house while the vendor agreed to prohibit the construction of a beer house, public house or tavern on any of his other plots. The pub was probably finished by February 1880 when Edworthy mortgaged it to H W Nevil, the bakers in Milkwood Road. Unfortunately, he died in May 1880, aged just 35.
