Camberwell pubs history index
At Bews Corner, Lordship Lane in 1865, 1872 and 1878; a bit of earlier
background. The pub is on the site of the 'Green Man' which lasted from
1704-92 - it was here that the famous 'Dulwich waters' were discovered by
the landlord William Cox in 1741. The pub closed around 1792 - the property
was used as a house by Lord Thurlow and later as a school, Dr Glennie's
Academy - where Lord Byron received some of his early education. The
building was pulled down in 1825 and the site used as a pleasure ground with
a small beer house called 'Bew's Corner' - the first landlord of the Grove
Tavern was James Owen, the grandson of 'Old Mother Bew' who ran 'Bew's
Corner'. For more info see 'The Pubs of Dulwich & Herne Hill' published by
the Dulwich & Herne Hill Societes last year. *
The pub is now closed (2018) and not likely to re-open in its current form. *
