Captain Mannering, Shoeburyness

Captain Mannering, Shoeburyness

12th July 1999

Taken by Stephen Parker

After an accident on the 26th February 1885 when 7 people were killed and four seriously wounded, it was decided, as a memorial, to build a hospital for serviceman's families. The original building was single storey and appears to have been mainly a maternity hospital. In 1908 a two storey extension was built and in 1927 an outpatients room was built. The hospital closed in 1948 and then housed the Garrison Headquarters until it's closure in 1976. On 1st June 1984 it opened as the Captain Mannering free house.
