There has been a Sun public house on this site at Romford since the early 17th century, although the records show a change of name (at one time it was called the Compasses). the hungry and thirsty traveller in Romford has always found hospitality at this spot. - Black Eagle ***

Mr Max Gillan has held the licence since
the new house was built by Trumans in 1937 but his wife was born in the old
Sun, a free house, and remembers the circumstances surrounding the purchase
of the house by our company. One of our Directors was visiting and had to
suffer the indignity of watching a dray from another brewery unloading
outside. He asked, "Why don't you sell only Truman's beers?". From this
remark came the negotiations which resulted in the house becoming our
property. The catering is managed by Mrs Gillan and her lunches are justly
famous.
With the Sun football team Champions of the 2nd division of the South Essex
league, Mr Gillan, who is vice-president of the Romford Football League, has
every reason to be proud of his connections in this field. - Black Eagle
