This pub was present as the Halfway House by 1872 and was rebuilt in its present form in 1894. The pub was renamed the Croppy Acre in 1994. It closed in 2005 and has since been converted to retail use. Formerly the Halfway House, and latterly a grocers cash and carry. **

My maternal grandfather was Christopher Crawley. They were bombed out of the
Nags Head, in Mile End
either late 1943 or very early 1944. I think that they were there for most
of the war. My grandparents moved in with us in Barking for a short time
after the bombing and then became the tenants at the
Duke of York in Barking. Sadly my
grandfather died shortly afterwards from pneumonia. My grandmother, Mary aka
Polly, moved from the Duke of York in the fifties to the Halfway House at
Leytonstone and retired from there late 50s / early 60s. ***
