In the summer of 1977 I moved to Penn in Buckinghamshire with my mother and her new partner who ran the Rose and Crown public house there.
Two summers later in 1979 they left to live in and run the Angler's Retreat in Dagenham, leaving in December 1981. Having married in Penn they were at that time -  Ella and Roy Sharkey, along with me, Christopher, being Ella's son from a previous marriage, but also taking the name Sharkey. **

They left to live in and manage the Spanish Steps in Canning Town until the summer of the following year 1981, when they were dismissed following the theft of the safe from the downstairs office in the middle of the night. Interestingly the relief couple who took over the running of the pub, arrived at lunch time from Newcastle and admitted that they had been informed of their new position the day before (i.e. before the safe was stolen).
My parents then took over The California pub, E16 2NQ, and left after closing on the night of 16th May 1982 - the only reason I know this with certainty is because I was quite young, and was unexpectedly allowed to stay up until the end of the World Snooker Final which Alex Higgins won.  We then gathered our possessions and left in the middle of the night. I don't know the circumstances surrounding that event, but I know that the owners of the pub had no idea that it was happening. **
