Spotted Dog, Conduit Street/Tindal Street, Chelmsford

1793 - Mr William Clackar sells to Messrs Woodcock and Johnstone an unnamed public house in Back Street, Chelmsford currently in occupation of Mrs Elizabeth Holmsted, a lease of 14 years, ***

On the 22nd of October 1804 a troop of Hanovarian soldiers arrived at the Spotted Dog, but were awakened during the night to find the stables ablaze and no escape route due to the doors being closed from the outside. Unfortunately they were not aware that the latch could be opened from the inside by poking a finger through a hole by the side of the door. 13 of the troop died before the remainder were rescued. The verdict was "Accidental Death" and the deceased were given a military funeral.
