Chelmsford has many different visions for me. From an early age, I visited close cousins in the area, and remember well the old Chelmsford route past Hylands, St Johns, and into the centre, always a bottle neck for traffic. It was only a twenty minute ride, but well remember the car sickness! This I eventually grew out of.
I was unaware of the rich history of Chelmsford that I missed, and much of the town was rebuilt in the 1960's. At a later stage in my life, I was always fond of the shopping centre - very modern, and appealing, compared to that of other local areas. A good place to park was in the car park near to Moulsham Street, and a short wander into the town centre.
About this time, with my sudden interest in family history, I spent many hours, with regular visits, to the very modern, and again appealing, and friendly Essex Record Office. Times change, and I do not visit the town as much as I used to, although I drive past Chelmsford every day, normally on the A12.
As my current research includes pub history, and noting that the Chelmsford section was 'missing' detail, I decided to take a closer look at one part of Chelmsford which has eluded much of the 1960's devastation, and still has a little history (Moulsham Street) - so here is a short guide to this single street on which I am building.
