William Clark whom you have as licensee of the Crown, Ardleigh, Essex, between 1867 and 1871, became licensee of the Royal Mortar, Colchester, some time after September 1870. The Eastern Standard for Sept 9 and 16 records Messrs Osborne, porter merchants, applying to have the licence which had been suspended because of the pub’s bad reputation, renewed, and given to Clark. A descendant claims that in 1871 he was licensee of the Earl of Derby, St Botolph’s, Colchester, which may be another name for the Royal Mortar. He was at the Bell Inn, Braughing at least between 1856 and 1861. ***
