London Robsons Street Directory in 1832 - Sweeting rents, Cornhill

Robsons 1832 directory index

This is the earliest street directory I have found so far which also includes pub history detail.

Sweeting rents, Cornhill
White James
1 Edinburgh Castle, White J
3 Snows Chop House, Snow William
4 Red Lion, Rhodes G
5 Joes Chop House, Gillham William
6 Hambro Coffee House, Ingram George
7 New York Coffee House, Careless James

Sweeting rents are in the east side of Sweeting alley, and the coffee houses are sometimes described as being in the Sweeting alley, e.g. the New York coffee House in 1822. It is believed both were cleared for the rebuilding of the Royal Exchange which re-opened in 1844. An alternative spelling is Sweetings rents; and many of these are still listed in the 1836 Pigots directory, and also as late as the 1840 Robsons directory, with similar occupants - but not in 1842.

Here is the right hand side of the Royal Exchange by 1895 and modern day

By 1842, James Careless is at the New York Coffee House, St Michaels alley. This is south of Cornhill, as compared to Sweetings alley and rents which are north side. The name, or license is clearly moved to this new address. I am going to add these six premises above to the St Michael Cornhill listings, but it is also very possible that they were part of St Benet Fink, which covers a small section of Threadneedle street in 1841.
