Charles Wells pubs in 2017

This is 2017. I run a number of pub history sites around the UK. They are all lacking in modern detail.

I thought it time to add some additional detail for the pubs that still exist, or in many cases, have just been created.

The Moorings

Myton Road, Leamington Spa
The Moorings canal side pub and kitchen in Myton Road has reopened following an imaginative and stylish £250k makeover, creating new jobs and introducing an award winning dining experience to both Warwick and Leamington Spa, The pub restaurant, which closed in August 2010, is now under new ownership and has been revitalised by the two young entrepreneurs, who won this year’s national Best Food Pub of the Year Award for The Stag at Offchurch.

Charles Harris and Nigel Brown have transformed The Moorings into a relaxing maritime ‘New England’ style environment, to capture the building’s two storey architectural features and its exceptional waterside location on the Grand Union Canal. The protégés of Raymond Blanc continue to be influenced by their mentor and only use preferred and trusted local suppliers to source fresh seasonal produce and the finest ingredients wherever possible. The menus reflect the favoured Anglo-French cuisine, which has become the hallmark of their success, including a more extensive lunchtime menu.

Innovative starters include the duo’s signature soufflé dishes, parfait and the appetising sharing plates for two, which are now offered with the added option of a box of baked camembert. The Moorings is also introducing a herb pancake range, which is offered as either a starter or a light lunch option. All members of staff also take pride in knowing the origins of all produce served, which includes the finest 28 day dry-aged Aberdeenshire beef, and local free range poultry. This features the succulent range of Aubrey Allen steaks served on beech blocks with homemade chips and a range of freshly prepared sauces. Joining the team at The Moorings is another national award winning chef, Gavin Allcock, who has left the Rose & Crown in Warwick to provide a key role in the new venture, producing high quality food at value for money prices.

Commenting at the launch of The Moorings, Charles Harris said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the refurbishment and all the finishing touches which have well exceeded our expectations, in terms of style and impact. Thanks to the help and support of all our expert specialist contractors, the project has been completed in record time and to budget. We just hope our customers are as excited about the new food and drink oasis as we are, and we look forward to welcoming everyone through our doors, even well behaved four legged friends!”

Speaking about the new look to the pub, he explained that the essence of the design was to bring a touch of New England to ‘Olde’ England, as The Moorings captures its connections to the historical heritage of nearby Warwick Castle. “We recognised the importance of balancing the New England maritime hues of ‘Niagra’ blue with influences of rural Warwickshire and therefore introduced contrasting shades of pistachio with rum caramel and iced frappé tones to reflect the county’s outstanding landscape. Our in-house interior design team then utilised a mix of international fabrics, leather and natural wood with maritime artefacts to create different traditional and sophisticated dining and drinking environments on both the two floors”, he added.

In contrast to the wide range of local beers and cask ales available, wine connoisseurs at The Moorings will marvel at the spectacular glass fronted wine cellar, which provides a central focal point to the ground floor bar area, offering wines from around the world by the bottle, or glass.
