History of West ham in 1912
West Ham 1912 Trade Directory
West Ham is a parliamentary and municipal borough and a county borough and
parish of considerable extent and population, pleasantly situated to the east
of the river Lea, which separates it from Middlesex, and is about a mile and a
half east from Bow Bridge, 5 miles from London, and bounded on the south by the
river Thames; it gives name to a union in the hundred of Becontree, and is in
the county court district of Bow, rural deanery of West Ham, archdeaconry of
Essex and diocese of St Albans, in the Eastern Metropolitan postal district and
within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan police.
The Great Eastern railway has stations at Forest Gate, Maryland Point and
Stratford, and the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway Stations at West Ham and
Plaistow. The parish is supplied with water by the Metropolitan Water Board, and
lighted with gas by the Gas Light and Coke Co, and with electricity from works
under control of the Corporation. The London Northern Outfall Sewer passes
through the whole length of the parish and the Abbey Mills pumping station is
situated here.
The parliamentary borough of West ham, created under the Redistribution of Seats
Act, 1885, returns two members in two divisions, viz, north and south; the north
comprising Stratford and Forest Gate, and the south, Plaistow, Canning Town and
Silvertown.
The parish of West Ham is divided into twelve Wards viz: New Town, Forest Gate,
High Street, Broadway, Park, Upton, West Ham, Plaistow, Hudsons, Canning Town,
Tidal Basin and Custom House and Silvertown.
A charter of incorporation was granted June, 1886, by which the local government district was created a municipal borough divided into four wards, viz, Stratford, Forest Gate, Plaistow and Canning Town. The corporation consists of a mayor, 12 aldermen and 36 councillors; for particulars see Stratford. Under the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1888, West Ham became a county borough for certain purposes.
In 1881 a stipendiary magistrate for West Ham parish was appointed, and sits at court in West Ham Lane, Stratford.
The parish church of All Saints is a spacious building of brick and stone in
mixed styles, but chiefly Perpendicular, consisting of chancel with north and
south chapels, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, 74 feet
high, with pinnacles, containing 10 excellent bells; several persons of eminence
have been buried in it, including Sir Thomas Foote Kt and bart, Lord mayor of
London in 1650 (ob 1688); and Sir James Smith kt, also Lord mayor, ob 1706; here
are also buried some of the ancient family of Ketelby, of whom was Henry Ketelby,
a law officer of Henry VIII ob 1508; there is an altar tomb in the north chapel,
dated 1485, and a mural tablet above it to Robert Rook, dated 1620; with figures
of himself and family; at the north west corner of the chancel is a stair turret
which formerly gave access to the roof loft; on the restoration of the interior
in September, 1865, a mural painting of the late 15th century, representing “The
Reward of the Righteous” and forming part of a “Doom” previously discovered, but
washed over in 1844, was successfully developed under the superintendence of the
Rev R H Clutterbuck, of Plaistow; in the churchyard is buried Mr George Edwards
FRS, a distinguished naturalist, born at Stratford, 3rd April, 1693, and d at
Plaistow, 23rd July, 1773. The register dates from 1653 and contains many
entries of persons who died from the plague in 1665-6. The living is a vicarage,
net yearly value £524, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since
1891 by the Rev Richard Arnold Pelly MA of Trinity College, Cambridge, hon canon
of St Albans, chaplain to the Bishop, rural dean of West Ham, and surrogate.
Edward Humphreys esq, is the impropriator of the rectorial tithes. St Judes
Mission church, in Stephen’s Road, is a structure of brick. St Thomas’s, Rokeby
Street, formerly a mission church in the district of All Saints, is also of
brick in the Gothic style and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle and a
belfry with spire containing one bell; there are sittings for 450 persons. The
living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, with residence, in the gift of the
Bishop of St Albans, and held since 1906 by the Rev Henry Brown-Gold MA of Merton
College, Oxford.
There are Baptist, Congregational, Primitive Methodist and Unitarian chapels,
and a meeting place for a sect called the “Church of Christ”.
West ham cemetery, formed in 1857, is situated in the Cemetary Road, Forest
gate, and consists of 20 acres, with two mortuary chapels (Church of England
and Nonconformist); it is under the control of the Public Health Committee of
the Corporation.
The Conference Hall, in West Ham Lane, is a structure of brick, erected at an estimated cost of £8, 715, from the designs of Mr F Boreham, architect; the principal hall will hold 2,000 persons, and there is also a smaller hall and several auxiliary rooms.
West ham contains large chemical works, an extensive patent leather cloth manufactory, flour mills and a large brewery, smelting works, copper works and other manufactories, distilleries etc, A market was anciently held in West ham, for which a charter was presented in 1253, by Richard Montfichet, but it is now discontinued.
The 6th Territorial Force Battalion Essex Regiment have their head quarters at the Cedars, Portway, with over four acres of ground attached, on which a spacious corrugated iron drill hall has been built. The Cedars, formerly known as ”Upton Lane House” and for many years the residence of the celebrated Mrs Elizabeth Fry, sister of Samuel Gurney, abuts on West Ham Park.
The West Ham and Eastern General Hospital was first established in 1861, in a house in the Romford Road, Stratford; the present dispensary in West Ham Lane, was erected in 1879, at a cost of £4,000, the site being given by the late Mrs Mary Curtis, of Stratford. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid 18 June 1888, by HRH, the late Duke of Cambridge KG and the building was completed in March, 1890, from designs by Messrs J L and A C Houston, architects of London, and formally opened 23 April by William, 7th Duke of Westminster KG: the hospital was originally intended for accidents only, but was enlarged in 1908 and 1910, and there are now over 100 beds; the wards are fire-proof, and there are separate exits for each ward in case of fire. The hospital is free, and being unendowed, is entirely dependent on voluntary support.
There are almshouses for twenty poor women near the parish church of All Saints,
each of whom receives about 4s per week; Roger Harris’s almshouses, in Gift
Lane, are for six poor women. There are numerous charitable bequests, amounting
in all to about £450 yearly. Left from time to time by various benefactors for
the benefit of the poor, and distributed under a scheme by the Charity
Commissioners.
West Ham Park, comprising about 80 acres, is well timbered, and contains some
fine spreading cedars and shrubberies. It was formerly known by the name of
“Upton park”, and belonged to Dr Fothergill, by whom the gardens were laid out,
and many of the trees planted by him 150 years since, are still extant;
subsequently it was the residence of the late Samuel Gurney: his grandson, Mr
John Gurney, banker of Norwich, offered this beautiful park as a public
recreation ground for its estimated value of £25,000, contributing at the same
time £10,000 towards that amount; the Corporation of the City of London also
voted £10,000 and the remainder being made up by local subscriptions, the park
was publicly opened on the 20th July, 1874, by the Lord Mayor, as a public
recreation ground. It is under the control of a committee of 15 persons, 8
nominated by the City Corporation, 4 by Mr John Gurney and 3 elected by the
local authorities; the cost of its maintenance is entirely defrayed by the
Corporation of the City of London. The mansion formerly known as “Upton Park
House”, but now called the “Cedars” and for many years the residence of the
celebrated Mrs Elizabeth Fry, sister of Samuel Gurney, is still standing, and
forms, with its picturesque grounds of about 6 acres, a distinct but as yet
private part of the park.
The area of West Ham county borough and of the civil parish is 4,558 acres of
land, 125 of inland and 236 of tidal water and 67 of foreshore; rateable value
at Michaelmas, 1911 was £1,313,836; and the population at the census of 1901 was
267, 358, distributed amongst the wards as follows, viz: No 1 or New Town,
18,306; No 2 or Forest Gate, 19,892; No 3 or High Street, 19,002; No 4 or
Broadway, 15,555; No 5 or Park, 15,273; No 6 or Upton, 17,580; No 7 or West Ham,
31,652; N0 8 or Plaistow, 26,683; No 9 or Hudsons, 23, 667; No 10 or Canning
Town, 24,127; No 11 or Tidal Basin, 29,121; No 12 or Custom House and Silvertown,
26, 389.
The population in 1911 was 289,102.
The population of the parliamentary borough in 1911 was :- North Division, 101,817; South Division, 187,285; total 289, 102.
The number of electors on the parliamentary register in 1912 was: North Division, 16,587; South Division, 27, 142; total, 43, 829.
