 History of Rainham

 

Rainham, is a village, parish, and railway station on the London and Southend railway, on the Ingrebury brook, in Chafford Hundred, Romford Union, and county court district, Rochester diocese, Essex archdeaconry, Chafford deanery, South Essex, 3 miles north west of Purfleet steam-boat station, 13 from London, 7 ½ from Grays, 10 from Tilbury and 5 east of Barking. The area is 3,197 acres, and the population in 1861 was 987. The village forms a considerable street on the London Road, and has a bridge over the Ingerbury, and a quay on the creek, at its mouth, in the Thames. The living is a vicarage, worth £412 yearly, with residence, in the patronage of Henry Godsalve Crosse, esq, and held by the Rev Henry George Roche, BC L. The church of St Helen & St Giles is an old structure, , with nave, south aisle and porch; the arch separating the nave from the chancel is of Norman architecture. This is in the Eastern metropolitan postal district.
