History of Plaistow
Plaistow 1855
Plaistow – Plaistow
ward is a suburb of London, adjoining West Ham, and comprises the larger portion
of West Ham parish, in the bishopric of London, South Essex, Beacontree Hundred,
West Ham Union, and the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal court and
metropolitan police, being a tract of rich marsh land, extending south to the
Thames. The most inhabited part of the district is 4 ½ miles from Whitechapel
church, by the Commercial and East India Dock roads. The Eastern Counties branch
line to North Woolwich steamboat station has a station on the Barking road; and
the iron bridge was constructed over the river Lea in 1810; a toll of one
halfpenny is demanded for all foot passengers. Plaistow was on the 19th
June, 1844, constituted an ecclesiastical district, and in 1851 it contained a
population of 2,668. A new church was completed at Plaistow in 1830, at a cost
of £4,800, in a Tudor style; the Rev Richard William Bishop Marsh is the
incumbent. The Society of Friends and Independents have each places of worship;
and there are also schools for the education of boys, girls and infants on the
National and British systems. The Victoria Docks are in Plaisto marsh, around
which is a population of 3,000. Here are National Schools, in which service is
performed on Sundays. There is an increasing population also about Mr Silver’s
India-rubber clothing factory, near North Woolwich.
