Adelaide Tavern, 1 Adelaide Road, Hampstead NW3

Hampstead pub history index

The Adelaide Tavern at Chalk Farm from February 1903, Landlord William Du Fosse. This building was demolished in the early 1990s having stood derelict for several years and a replica built on the site. The original pub can be spotted in several episodes of the early series of Minder, as it was opposite the location of 'The Winchester Club'. *+
Trading by at least the early 1980s, this pub has since been converted to commercial and residential use. ***

I'm not sure if this photo is the actual pub or a pastiche. It's known as the Adelaide Tavern Apartments and has two wings in a V-shape; you can just make out part of one to the right and if the pub's genuine, I doubt the wings are. On the one hand I don't know how easy it would be for a builder to match the bricks (though it has been done on St. Pancras station), but on the other hand I can't see why a developer would demolish a pub and replace it with a building which looks like a pub. ***

Shown are two air-raid shelter tickets belonging to my great aunt Nancy Jones (1903 - 1973) and her aunt Edith Robinson (b.1874). It seems that they both lived at The Adelaide in Chalk Farm during the 2nd World War. **+

A business card of Nancy and her husband Alfred Jones show they ran several pubs in London, including Ye Olde Mitre in St Martins Lane, The Blue Posts in Rupert street where he is listed as the licensee in 1938 - and another called The Blackamoors Head, Whitcomb street; plus the Carlisle Arms, Bateman street, Soho where they are all listed in 1939 electoral register. **+
