Roman London - the London wall
These pages are based on a "Royal Commission On Historical Monuments 1834" - actually it is 1928; which is in the public domain.
{27). Aldermanbury Postern, North East side.
"In the spring of last year (1857) excavations for the foundations of houses on
the north-eastern side of Aldermanbury Postern laid open a portion of the wall
of peculiar construction, being composed of a series of blind arches, as shown
in the annexed cut, prepared from a sketch made on the North of London Wall,
looking towards the street, the present level of which is indicated by the
horizontal line below the temporary paling, upon the pavement.
The view shows the wall as it appeared while being cut through and excavated up
to the street. At first it was supposed there had been openings in the wall, but
as the work advanced it was ascertained that the arches were merely
constructional as they formed, throughout, part of the solid masonry.
