The Old Sheer Hulk was run by my father who was Arthur Wilfred Bond (not Arthur William as stated in directories). He, and my mother, Violet Caroline
Bond (nee strange) were the landlords until 1948/49. *
On leaving the public house, my father left a log book there which dated
back to the 1800s in which was logged payments to various landlords for the
last grog of rum issued to convicts about to be deported to Australia, the
hulks were then Anchored in the Thames at Woolwich. The rum was supposedly
for medicinal purposes it was not sold to customers, but reserved for the
convicts and would, I imagine, taste revolting! Sadly I believe that the log
book was probably thrown out when the pub was demolished! *
